Electronic Pet Fence Understanding How They Work And Why You Might Use One?

An electronic pet fence works generally by delivering a mild non lethal sudden electric shock shock to the animal when it get to close to an area it shouldn't be.

If your animal (often but not exclusively dog) approaches and area where they are not permitted to go they will get a shock through their electric collar.

Now to some people this may seem a little cruel but it has been shown to be highly effective means of preventing animals wandering or encroching in areas they need to be kept out from. Also most animal experts the animal quickly learns where to avoid and suffers no longer term effects.

These type of devices are used to keep a dog or other animal in your garden or back yard without having to tie them up. They work to stop animals such as goats wandering or dogs chasing after the neighbours cats or running out in front of cars.

The great thing is with a little initial supervision you can leave your animal to be able to roam free and not have to worry about them doing damage or getting in to trouble doing their toilet in the neighbours garden.

In the past many pet owners have had to build costly and to be honest quite unsightly physical barriers to keep their pets in and out of other peoples gardens with an electronic fence you can still keep your dog secure but without the ugly fencing.

If you want to let your dog run free even if your garden has physical fences you may want to keep them away from certain areas such as the kids sand pit or the pond an electric pet fence is perfect for this.

If you think using an electric pet fence is going to be very costly or complex think again I have outlined the basic procedure required to set one up and as you will see it's pretty quick and not that hard to do yourself.

A: Firstly you will need to wire the area you want to protect (this if you like is the only real fence you'll have) these are basicaly wires which act as antenna which you use to surround the area you wish to contain your pet in with the electric pet fence.

The good news these wires are far less unsightly than a fence and most people actually hide our bury them so they can't be seen.

This installation is pretty straight forward and any one with basic abililities with a hammer and screwdriver should find this pretty simple to do.

B: The electronic pet collar is worn by the pet around the neck of the animal. When the collar detects the low current (signal) running through the antenna wires is close (a couple of feet or so) the animal will hear a high frequency beeping or whistling noise telling him that he or she is close to an area which is off limits.

If the dog or other animal gets even closer eventually they will recieve a painful but harmless electric shock telling them to step back from the area.

C: Some animals learn far quicker than others but most dogs within a short while will quickly understand they are contained within a specific pre defiend area.

This is known as conditioning the animal to a response. Dogs are specifically easy to train using this technique once they become conditioned.

The only proviso is the location of the wires should never be changed as this may confuse your dog and ultimately they could become depressed or stressed.

But suprisingly most animals (especially dogs) only need a few harmless shocks before they get the message and soon the dog will recognize that once they hear the audible warning it's time to turn around and go the other way.

Some pet owners decide to plant markers or flags along the perimitter to help the animal identify the contained area.

most animals don't need the markers because they learn pretty quickly that they should remain in a defined area. This techique is far better than having a dog caged or tethered for many hours a day.

Some people argue that giving a shock to the pet is inhumane but those that use this system state that the animal learns really quickly and they are able to leave their pet so they can get freedom to roam.

If you are considering setting up your own electronic pet fence you can find some great information and free guide at electronic pet fence tips.
